Activation is the point where a new user first experiences enough value to justify returning. It is rarely the same as registration, onboarding completion, or the first screen view.

Start with retained cohorts. Compare what returning users did in their first session or week with what non-returning users did. Look for behaviours that represent the product promise, then test whether they remain predictive across acquisition channels and customer types.

A useful activation metric is understandable, influenceable, and timely. Pair it with guardrails so that teams do not optimise a proxy while harming quality or long-term retention.
